We are now an approved BALI & ROLO training provider. That means teams can gain recognised health, safety and environmental awareness training with us, ready for live sites and smoother inductions. ROLO is the accepted pathway into LISS/CSCS SmartCards, helping people evidence competence quickly and confidently.
Our practical courses run from our Preston training centre, delivered by approachable tutors who focus on real site scenarios. You get clear guidance from booking to certification, backed by our proven standards and accreditations.
BALI is the British Association of Landscape Industries, the UK’s leading trade association and accreditation body for landscaping professionals, promoting standards, training and industry support since 1972.
ROLO stands for Register of Land-based Operatives. It is BALI’s health, safety and environmental awareness training designed to raise standards and reduce the risk of accidents for anyone working in land-based environments. Courses are delivered by approved providers and end with assessment and certification.
When BALI approves an organisation to deliver ROLO health, safety and environmental awareness courses to BALI’s standards, they become a recognised BALI & ROLO Training Provider. This also enables them to issue certificates recorded on the ROLO register.
BALI approval signals that our training meets a recognised industry standard. It shows our tutors, materials and assessments have been quality checked, so teams know they are learning the right things in the right way. It also confirms that our ROLO courses align with the LISS/CSCS pathway, which makes mobilisation and verification simpler on live sites.
For clients, it is a clear marker of trust. Choosing a BALI approved provider means you benefit from consistent content, reliable assessment and records that stand up to procurement and audit scrutiny. It reflects the same quality systems that underpin our wider services and the way we work day to day.
What this means in practice
ROLO is structured to meet learners where they are and help them progress with confidence. Each pathway builds practical competence around real site risks, with clear learning outcomes and a straightforward assessment.
Operative
Entry-level health, safety and environmental awareness with a short multiple-choice assessment. Typical delivery is one day, online or in person. Passing supports the application for a LISS/CSCS SmartCard.
Supervisor
Built for team leads responsible for planning, briefings and checks. Content extends the Operative syllabus with leadership of safe systems of work and incident response, mapped for LISS/CSCS eligibility.
Manager
For those managing programmes, subcontractors and audits. Emphasis on legal duties, risk controls, organisational policies and performance monitoring. Successful completion enables applications for the relevant LISS/CSCS card route.
All courses follow BALI’s approved ROLO framework so content and assessment are consistent and recognised across UK sites.
Passing ROLO is the first milestone. The next step is turning that result into a LISS/CSCS SmartCard that proves competence on site. Here’s how the process works.

Practical, sector-relevant delivery
Courses follow BALI’s ROLO framework so content maps directly to real site risks like work at height, plant and equipment, and environmental controls, ending with a formal assessment and certificate.
Quality assured
Our training aligns with BALI’s LISS/CSCS route that is recognised across UK sites, so your teams can evidence competence clearly.
Flexible payment options
When you book with Great Oaks, you have the option to pay with Klarna. This means that you don’t need to worry about paying the full amount upfront, but can instead spread the cost to suit your needs.
Wider certifications
Our audited standards and accreditations underpin delivery quality. As an ARB Approved Contractor, we apply robust systems for risk assessment, supervision and incident response across tree work and associated services, so training is reinforced by proven practice.
Integrated services
When you need integrated support around vegetation management, our grounds maintenance teams and site clearance specialists apply the same safety-led approach on live sites.
Confidence for highways and infrastructure
Where projects require NHSS 18, we help you align training evidence and records to demonstrate a trained and competent workforce.
Booking is straightforward. Choose the Operative, Supervisor or Manager route, select a date at our Preston training centre or request an on-site delivery, then confirm attendee details and any access needs. You receive joining instructions, ID guidance and what to bring, so the day runs smoothly.
After passing, you receive a ROLO certificate that is recognised for LISS/CSCS applications. Certificates are typically valid for five years, with a two-year window from completion to submit your LISS/CSCS SmartCard application. Plan refreshers before expiry to keep records current.
Who needs ROLO?
Anyone applying for a LISS/CSCS SmartCard under the land-based scheme must evidence health, safety and environmental awareness via ROLO.
How does ROLO relate to LISS/CSCS?
ROLO provides the health, safety and environmental awareness component used within the LISS/CSCS SmartCard process.
How long is the ROLO certificate valid?
Normally five years. For card applications, the ROLO pass must be within the last two years at the point of application.
What evidence is needed for a card?
Submit your ROLO pass and any occupation-specific qualifications required for the chosen card. The LISS/CSCS scheme booklet sets out the routes and evidence.
Is ROLO relevant for highways work?
Yes. NHSS 18 expects trained and competent teams for landscaping and arboriculture in the highway environment, so ROLO and LISS/CSCS help demonstrate due diligence.
Tell us what you need and we’ll shape a course plan that fits your schedule, your sites and your teams. We deliver ROLO Operative, Supervisor and Manager training at our Preston centre or on your premises, with clear guidance from booking to certificate and support through the LISS/CSCS application.
