Whether you’re stepping into the world of forestry for the first time or looking to build on your existing skills, using a chainsaw safely and effectively is essential. If you’re looking to use a chainsaw professionally, then formal training and certification are a must. This is crucial both for compliance with industry standards and for your safety.
At Great Oaks, we’re passionate about helping individuals develop the confidence and ability to work with chainsaws safely, responsibly, and in line with nationally recognised standards. In this post, we’ll discuss our range of chainsaw courses and how they can help you to gain your NPTC Certificate of Competence: an industry-approved qualification that opens doors to a wide range of outdoor and arboricultural careers.
Chainsaws are powerful and versatile tools, but without the right training, they can pose serious risks. Employers, landowners, and contractors will expect you to hold formal qualifications demonstrating your competence. In fact, operating a chainsaw without the appropriate certification may invalidate insurance or breach workplace regulations.
Training with a trusted centre such as Great Oaks will ensure that you’re able to use equipment efficiently and confidently. This will help to reduce the likelihood of accidents, minimise equipment wear and increase your productivity. In turn, a new world of opportunities will open up to you in fields such as forestry, arboriculture, estate maintenance, and conservation work.

The NPTC Certificate is issued by City & Guilds Land Based Services, and it’s one of the most widely recognised qualifications for chainsaw operators across the UK. Earning this certificate means you’ve demonstrated the practical skills and safety awareness required to use a chainsaw professionally.
There are various NPTC units depending on the type of chainsaw work involved, from maintenance and cross-cutting, through to more advanced operations like tree felling or aerial cutting. Whatever your goal, completing an NPTC course shows that you’re serious about working to professional standards and looking after both yourself and those around you.
Whether you’re new to the tools or looking to progress your career, Great Oaks can help you take that vital next step. Find out more about what NPTC chainsaw courses involve.
Did you know? The Forestry Skills Study found that competent chainsaw operators, particularly those certified for tree felling, were in short supply in England and Wales, with employers emphasising the urgent need for training investment.
At Great Oaks, our chainsaw training courses are designed to give you the practical skills, technical knowledge, and confidence to operate a chainsaw safely and competently.
During the course, you’ll cover essential areas such as:
If you’re taking a more advanced course, you may also learn techniques for felling small trees, processing timber, or working in complex environments.
With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and one-to-one feedback, our courses ensure you’re genuinely ready for real-world work in the field.

Great Oaks chainsaw courses are designed to be practical, accessible, and tailored to your experience level. Most courses range from 1 to 5 days.
We focus on hands-on learning in realistic settings, with small group sizes to ensure plenty of individual guidance. You’ll learn through demonstrations, supervised practice, and discussions with your instructor, building knowledge step by step before moving on to more complex tasks.
