If you want trees that thrive, not just survive, the work starts before a spade goes in the ground. We match species to the site, prepare the soil, plant to BS8545, then look after new trees so they establish well. Great Oaks delivers tree planting across Preston, Lancashire and the North West for developers, housing, schools, utilities and public realm projects. You get clear plans, tidy sites and simple aftercare that keeps everything on track.

Aim | Best fit | What we install | Where it works well | What you see in year 1 |
Make an entrance look finished | Semi-mature impact | Heavy standards with anchors, irrigation and mulch | Car parks, plazas, main approaches | Instant structure and shade lines forming |
Grow canopy on a budget | Coverage at scale | Whips and transplants with guards and mulch | Estates, boundaries, open space | Fast numbers in the ground, low unit cost |
Screen and support biodiversity | Living boundaries | Mixed native hedgerow in staggered rows | Schools, housing edges, utilities | Early screening and strong habitat value |
Create woodland | Long-term canopy | Native woodland mix with spacing and shelters | Larger parcels, mitigation land | Early take with simple maintenance route |
Plant in paving | Trees in hard landscapes | Engineered pits, soil cells, root barriers and aeration | Streets, car parks, courtyards | Healthy trees despite tight urban conditions |
We begin with the purpose of the planting. Screening, shade, habitat or a quick visual lift each need a different approach. Soil and access come next. If ground is compacted, we decompact and improve it. In paved areas we install proper pits with anchors, irrigation and barrier controls so roots and hard surfaces can live side by side. Protection matters too. Stakes or below-ground anchors, guards and clean mulch rings keep young trees safe from wind, strimmers and mowers.
Aftercare is planned upfront. Watering, weed control and a first formative prune help trees set strong structure. You receive a simple schedule and photo reports so you can see progress without chasing.
We support planning conditions and Biodiversity Net Gain targets with straightforward documentation. Where new planting sits alongside retained trees, we align with BS5837 so protection and installation do not clash. If a site includes conservation areas or TPOs, we complete the checks and produce method statements.

Watering in dry spells, weed control, mulch top-ups and light formative pruning make the difference between average and excellent establishment. We set out a sensible programme and stick to it. If replacements are needed within a fair defects period, we handle them quickly.
