Tree Relocation

Relocating Trees and Mature Hedges

Sometimes the right tree is in the wrong place. We relocate trees and mature hedges so projects can proceed without losing valuable canopy or character. From single feature trees to estate-wide moves, our arborists plan the lift, protect the root system, and re-establish the tree with simple, effective aftercare.

Based in Preston, we work across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and the wider North West.

What We Move and How

Situation

Best method

Typical size range

Notes

Semi-mature amenity trees that need a new position

Tractor-mounted tree spade

Up to ~18–22 cm stem diameter*

Fast, tidy and cost-effective where access allows

Larger specimens, tight access or hard landscapes

Lift with crane and purpose-built lifting frame

20–40+ cm stem diameter*

Ideal when tree spades will not fit or ground is constrained

Long formal hedges to reconfigure boundaries

Sectional lifting with mechanical assist

Height/width dependent

Phased moves reduce stress and help retain form

Temporary “decant” during works

Spade or crane to a holding bed

As above

Useful on development sites to protect retained stock

* Sizes are indicative. Final feasibility depends on species, age, condition, soil, access and timing.

A Relocation that Works, Step by Step

  1. Feasibility survey – Species, vigour, structure, utilities and access are checked. We confirm permissions if the tree is protected or in a conservation area.
  2. Root preparation – For larger moves, staged root pruning may be advised in advance to promote a compact, fibrous rootball.
  3. Lift and transport – Tree spade for suitable stock and access. Crane-and-frame where size or surfacing demands it.
  4. New pit and installation – Correct dimensions, decompaction and drainage considered. We install anchors or stakes, irrigation and mulch.
  5. Aftercare – Watering schedule, weed control and formative pruning for a clean, stable establishment. Short photo reports keep everyone informed.

Why Relocate Instead of Remove and Replant?

  • Preserves instant structure and canopy cover
  • Retains known, proven stock on your site
  • Avoids long waits for new trees to catch up
  • Demonstrates a sensitive, sustainable approach in planning and public settings

Permissions and Planning

Protected trees can sometimes be relocated with the local authority’s approval. We handle checks, prepare method statements and provide the documentation planners expect. On development sites we align relocation with BS5837 constraints and construction sequencing so protection and programme stay on track.

Aftercare that Actually Happens

Relocations succeed on the back of simple, regular care. We set out a pragmatic plan:

  • Watering visits through the first growing seasons
  • Weed control and mulch top-ups
  • Inspections after high winds or hot spells
  • Light formative pruning for balance and clearance
  • Clear defects period and fair replacement approach agreed upfront

What We Need from You

  • Site address, photos and a quick sketch of existing and proposed positions
  • Any known protections or services in the area
  • Preferred time window or programme dates
  • Access notes: gates, surfaces, gradients and overhead restrictions

Sectors We Support

Developers and principal contractors, schools and colleges, housing providers, estates and parks, utility and infrastructure sites, business parks and leisure. Whether you are opening access for construction or reshaping a mature landscape, we plan moves around your schedule.

FAQs

Can you move trees year-round?
Yes, with the right preparation. Dormant season is often kinder, but summer moves can succeed with larger rootballs and strict watering.

How do you decide between a spade and a crane?
Access, size and surfaces decide it. If a tree spade can reach and the stem diameter is within range, it is usually the quickest and tidiest option. Otherwise we use a lifting frame and crane.

Will the tree survive the move?
We only recommend relocation where the indicators are good. Success depends on species, condition, handling and aftercare. We will be clear about risk and the support needed.

Can you move a protected tree?
Often yes, with consent. We help with the application and provide the method statement and records the authority expects.

Do you offer temporary relocation?
Yes. We can decant trees to an on-site holding bed and return them when works are complete.
